Cost is the number one reason people stall on solar or a heat pump. That's about to change. The UK Government's new Warm Homes Loan Scheme, part of its Warm Homes Plan, will let lenders offer low-cost, UK Government-backed loans for solar, batteries and heat pumps. Lenders have now been invited to take part in its accelerated launch, expected in 2026–27, and the backing is designed to bring the interest rate down, so the monthly cost stays manageable.
Government backing is designed to cut the cost of borrowing well below a normal loan. Independent analysis by Nesta suggests rates could land around 0–3%, with final rates and terms set by participating lenders.
Expected to cover the whole job: around £15,000 for solar or a battery, and up to £20,000 for a heat pump.
